Software Support and FAQs
A Software Maintenance Agreement (SMA) is a service that provides users with ongoing support and updates for their software after the initial purchase. It typically includes access to new software versions, bug fixes, security updates and technical support, ensuring the software remains functional and up to date.
To make assistive technology more accessible, the software authors have begun offering yearly subscriptions for JAWS and ZoomText. This means no large upfront costs for a perpetual licence, just a yearly fee that includes updates, support and new features. You can still install the software on up to three computers, with full access throughout the year.
Already have a perpetual licence?
You can continue using it for the purchased version. However, to receive updates and the latest versions, you’ll need to keep your licence current with the Software Maintenance Agreement (SMA). Starting Monday, 20 October, 2025, upgrades will no longer be available for lapsed licences. If your licence has lapsed, you can either switch to a subscription licence or purchase a new perpetual licence with an SMA.
What else is new?
- All new perpetual licences must include an SMA.
- SMAs are now time-based (24 months) instead of version-based.
What should I do next?
I have a 2025 licence without an SMA
To keep receiving updates, we recommend purchasing an SMA before Monday, 20 October, 2025, ahead of the 2026 release.
I have a licence with active SMAs
No action is needed. Please ensure that you contact us in the future to keep up to date with your SMAs.
I have a 2024 or older licence
Be sure to upgrade before Monday, 20 October, 2025, as upgrades won’t be available until after this date.
I have a 2024 or older licence and don’t plan to upgrade
You can continue using your current version, but you won’t receive updates or be able to upgrade later.
To check your current licence version or SMA status, you can enter your licence serial number on the Freedom Scientific activation portal.

Frequently asked questions about software
What is a subscription?
Think of it like a mobile phone, streaming service or internet plan - you pay as you go to always have the latest version of the software. Instead of buying once and having to manage future updates or maintenance agreements, you choose a 1-, 2-, or 3-year plan and get everything included: updates, support, new features - no separate SMA needed. It’s a flexible, modern way to stay current with less hassle.
What licence types are available in a subscription?
All products, which include single users of JAWS/Fusion Pro, JAWS/Fusion Home, ZoomText Magnifier and ZoomText Magnifier/Reader. The subscription model does not support network or USB/dongles.
What are the benefits of a subscription over a perpetual licence?
Subscriptions offer a lower upfront cost and consistent, pay as you go pricing - no need to budget for future version purchases or separate maintenance. You always get the latest features, updates and support with less hassle and no surprise costs. It’s a simple, flexible way to stay current and save time.
- Subscription highlights (1-, 2-, or 3-year plan) Ideal for: Anyone who wants flexibility and fewer headaches.
- Always up to date: Get all the latest features, AI tools and updates - everything is included for the length of your subscription. No separate SMA or future version purchases needed.
- Better security and compatibility: Stay in sync with Windows, Office, Citrix (remote access included) and more. There is no risk of your software breaking after an update.
- Simplified licensing: No SMA required. One subscription provides full access with support included.
- Peace of mind: Auto-renewals, continuous updates and dedicated tech support.
Can I purchase more than a 3-year subscription?
Yes, each additional year would be at the previous year’s rate.
Will the subscription model work with OpenBook?
No, because OpenBook is an older technology.
Will my Citrix/remote access work in the new subscription model?
Yes, it’s included in your subscription at no additional charge. For perpetual SMA licences, this is an additional fee.
Is a subscription available for network licences?
No.
Can subscriptions be used in commercial/employment settings as well as home computers and still maintain the three computers?
Subscriptions are available in both home and professional (commercial/employment) licence types. Network licences are not available under our subscription model. For non-network licences, our model remains the same - one licence is assigned to one user. That user can install the licence on three devices.
Would SMAs require that the computer is always connected to the internet to work?
No.
When I transition from perpetual to subscription licence, will my serial number stay the same?
No. The user gets a new serial number and an authorisation code. The user enters the authorisation code in the usual way through the Client Activator, which is part of the product.
Why is SMA now required?
The SMA ensures customers have access to the latest software improvements, compatibility with current operating systems, and faster support. Think of the SMA as your insurance policy. It keeps your licence alive in a fast-moving tech environment.
Will my perpetual licence still work without an SMA? Do I have to renew?
Yes, the licence will work. However, the software needs regular updates to keep running smoothly. Without an SMA (renewal), bug fixes and updates don’t come through, which can lead to security vulnerabilities and issues when apps change. There have been too many cases where users get stuck with outdated software, so now every perpetual licence requires an SMA to make sure you always get the latest improvements and compatibility fixes.
Are SMAs now included for all licence types?
For perpetual licences, yes. Subscriptions do not require an SMA.
How long is an SMA valid?
SMA terms are for two years.
How many SMAs can a customer purchase before the current one expires?
Customers can purchase up to two SMAs for the same licence, as long as they’re on an up-to-date SMA.
What if I’ve recently purchased a licence without an SMA?
If you’ve purchased a 2025 licence without an SMA at the time of sale, your licence would remain in good standing until the 2026 release. The 2026 release will be available in October 2025.
What is the difference between version-based SMAs and time-bound SMAs?
Version-based SMAs previously covered two versions, i.e.: JAWS 2023 and JAWS 2024. Whereas time-based SMAs cover a 24-month period, i.e. April 1, 2023, through to March 31, 2025.
If I have an active version-based SMA, do I have to switch to a time-bound SMA right now?
No. You will be transitioned to a time-bound SMA when your version-based SMA is up for renewal.
How does the time-bound SMA change impact me? What are the benefits of this change?
Moving to a time-bound SMA makes it easier to stay current with updates and support, without worrying about version numbers. It’s a simpler, more predictable experience that reflects how most modern software is managed today.
Is there a price difference between time and version bound SMA’s?
No.
